Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS for short, is a medical term for a selection of conditions which bring discomfort in the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract). Liver pain is one possible result of having such a disease.

Symptoms

Irritable bowel syndrome symptoms are varied, even more so since a collection of diseases are considered under the same name. Some possibilities as symptoms appearing due to IBS or in patients with such a condition may include the following items:

Abdominal discomfort
Abdominal distension
Back pain

Bowel habit changes (including urgency)
Chronic abdominal pain

Causes

The precise cause or causes for irritable bowel syndrome are not known. However, some conditions which may be present in IBS cases include:

Celiac disease
Chronic functional abdominal pain
Functional constipation (chronic)
Infections
Inflammatory bowel diseases
Parasites

Diagnosis and Treatment

No particular test exists for providing an irritable bowel syndrome diagnosis. Differential diagnosis processes may be used to remove other possible causes of the symptoms.

Treatment methods for IBS may vary in different patients and cases. Some possible options include diet changes, medications, alternative treatments, and therapy.
